I was working on a video for our Longevity & Living Foods Coach Certification this morning and I started thinking about the soul versus the spirit and what each really might be. What is a soul? Is it the same as our spirit, or are they two separate parts of one whole?

I mean, we don't really know. But, I was thinking...

Soul

The word soul is used in a number of ways.

I've heard a pilot say we have 125 souls on board. You might call someone "a good soul", or describe your "soul’s work". I’ve also heard it said that someone has a dark or evil soul.

So is a soul the same as a personality? Is our soul the place that gives us life or is it where our personalities come from?

I definitely think our soul can be our mind, emotions or will power. Our soul can hurt for ourselves and others. Our soul can be energized or on fire. Our soul can be at rest or at peace. Do we worry with our soul or with our minds? I don’t know.

Spirit

We are all created as spiritual beings too. I like to call this our higher being. Is my spirit your spirit. Is the spirit where we all connected? Are we one spirit?

Sometimes I think my spirit surrounds my soul. My soul is where I do the work to get back to spirit. In the layers of self (The Koshas), I believe that my soul is my wisdom body, not my physical or energetic body. My spirit definitely feels out of body, much like my bliss body. But is my spirit really the space, the void, the unborn, or the nothing that we all originate from? Is spirit pure light? I have no idea.

I'd like to think that we are always in the practice of transforming our souls, so that we become more in line with our already perfect spirits. And maybe that’s why it’s taking many lifetimes.
